Famed Author and Blogger, and Celebrated Caribbean Poet among Featured Speakers at Upcoming TEDxRoadTown Event
Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, 16th February 2017 – Do you know what it means to step outside your comfort zone? On March 29th, the BVI community is invited to attend TEDxRoadTown where remarkable speakers will take centre stage for thought provoking presentations under the theme – Throwing Out the Box.
Organisers of the event have scheduled this signature conference to take place at BVI International Arbitration Centre located in Ritter House from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“TEDxRoadTown offers a unique opportunity for people to come together to stir ideas and generate discussions that strive to encourage and challenge us. We are thrilled to have produced a roster of speakers who aim to enlighten, stimulate dialogue, and intellectual exchange to uplift our community,” said Abigail O’Neal, Organiser and Licence Holder.
Launched in 2009, TEDx is a programme of locally organised events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on TED.com and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe.
TEDxRoadTown is comprised of a group of professionals who desire to have their community become part of the greater TEDx community. They all have a favourite TED Talk that has changed their lives in some way. One of the curators coined the phrase, “Through TEDx we can bring the world closer to us.”
Speakers at TEDxRoadTown include:
- Ms. Luvvie Ajayi: A thirteen-year blogging veteran, she is the voice behind Awesomely Luvvie, a widely-respected humor blog that covers everything pop culture – from TV, movies and technology to travel, race and life’s random adventures. It is a collection of essays that critiques our fame-obsessed, social media-centric lives, while encouraging us to do better. Last week it was announced that Luvvie’s book will be made into a cable TV series by Shonda Rhimes.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Monica Lewinsky, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
